Moving into the final days of the federal election campaign, 2006 is looking a lot like 2004, the last time Canadians trudged to the polls to elect the lesser evil. The dynamics too are the same: Choose the Continentalist Conservative party, whose leader would see closer assimilation with the United States and all that implies; or return the ruling Liberals and their leader who believes in a slower, but as certain integration with the U.S.

Rounding out the race are the New Democrats, hoping to again play kingmaker in a minority government; the regional Bloc Quebecois; and upstarts, the Canadian Action Party and the Green Party of Canada. It is these smaller parties who may promise to be big players on election day, splitting the vote of loyalists fed up with both the Liberals and Conservatives.

Murray Dobbin is a Canadian author and journalist. His books include: ‘The Myth of the Good Corporate Citizen: Democracy Under the Rule of Big Business,’ ‘Preston Manning and the Reform Party,’ and his latest, ‘Paul Martin: CEO for Canada?’ He also writes for the B.C.-based online news site, The Tyee.ca. Murray Dobbin and Canada’s choice in the first half.

And; with just two weeks ‘til election day, what concerns you most? Are your issues being addressed?
Are they even a part of the election discourse?

While the Liberals are content to trumpet their imagined economic successes, and the Conservatives vow to eradicate same-sex marriage and introduce to Canada the penal policies that have proven disastrous in America. This as thousands of our fellow citizen starve and freeze on the streets; as Canadian soldiers, once known as “peacekeepers” man the garrisons of Empire in distant lands, and politicians conspire to undermine a democracy closer to home.

But what choice do we have?

David Piney is the Canadian Action Party candidate for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca. He’s a media activist who operates an E-News gleaning service specializing in under-reported issues that effect Canadians. David Piney and another course of action in the second half.

And; Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that’s good to do in and around Victoria in the coming week.

But first, Murray Dobbin and getting the government Canadians deserve.
